An Energy-efficient Future? How ‘Cool’ is That?

When young people are brought face-to-face with an energy-efficient future, the results can be truly amazing.

Southern Company, a sponsor of the TOUR Championship at East Lake Golf Course, hosted almost 150 students from Drew Charter School on a scavenger hunt through the SO Cool Zone. Among the stops, the students learned about energy efficiency in the SO Smart Home; checked out an Electric BMW i8; and took a turn in the Payne Stewart Award Photo Booth, where they learned about the late 11-time PGA TOUR winner and his legacy of character, charity and sportsmanship.

“Not all learning can happen in four walls. It has to happen out in the world,” said Mae Pagett, a sixth-grade science teacher at Drew Charter School who accompanied the students to the SO Cool Zone. “It’s great to see all the light bulbs go off, figuratively and literally.”

The SO Cool Zone, and Southern Company’s sponsorship of the TOUR Championship, are just part of the company’s overall commitment to the local community. A portion of the proceeds of the TOUR will go to Drew Charter School and the East Lake Foundation, a nonprofit established to revitalize Atlanta’s East Lake neighborhood.
